Natural light is not only a vital source of vitamin D, it can also brighten your mood and reduce the need for artificial lights in your home. Having natural light in your home makes it feel brighter and more welcoming. There are several ways in which you can improve the amount of natural light that enters your home. There are quick and easy methods to transform one room or more drastic changes that will improve the whole environment.

1. Net Curtains - One of the simplest ways to increase the natural light in a room, is to add light window dressings, which allow the light  to pass through. If your house is along a busy road or walk way you may often find yourself closing your curtains before the sun goes down to get some privacy from the outside world. This also closes off any remaining sunlight leaving you with artificial lighting that can strain your eyes. Adding some light net/voile curtains or some vertical blinds will allow the sunlight to shine through whist keeping your privacy intact. It's a good idea to have curtains as well as nets so that you don't lose any heat from the room.

2. Paint The Room A Brighter Colour - Redecorating a room can introduce more natural light, if you have a dark room try toning the colour down a few shades. This works well with warm colours such as oranges, yellows, creams and reds. Having lighter walls allows the sun to bounce off the colour and into your room. This will also work by having a feature wall in the darker colour and the other walls lighter.

4. Lighter Furniture & Accessories - Try replacing dark furniture and picture frames with lighter wood, reflective or metallic items. This will lighten up the room and allow any natural light to reflect off the surfaces.

3. Mirrors - Introducing a large mirror into your room is also a brilliant way to reflect the light. Mirrors will also make the space seem bigger and add depth.

5. Patio Doors & Bay Windows - A more permanent way to add more light, is by adding patio doors or bay windows to your home. These features will invite the sunlight into your home, this may seem like a costly way to add sunlight, but it will be worth it in the long run as you are adding a selling point to your home and increasing it's value.

6. Create An Illusion - Try rearranging your furniture, making rooms feel more open plan will let the light travel more fluently around your home and give the illusion of more space.

7. Replace Your Doors - Replacing your front and back door with doors that feature glass windows, this will allow the sunlight to flow into your home.

8. Conservatory - Adding a garden room constructed of large windows brings in the light and warmth of the sun into your home and also creates a new space for you to socialise or relax in.

9. Remove Light Blockers - Make sure there is nothing in your garden blocking the sunlight from entering your windows trim any over grown bushes to make the most of the sunlight. If you have large fences surrounding your garden consider getting fences with cut out patterns to allow the light to seep through.

10. Dormer Windows - Dormer windows are an ideal way to add natural light to loft conversions to reduce the need for artificial lights. This will also transform the appearance of your home.
